Thistle

I remember, vaguely, as a kid calling these teasles. I have no idea why. They're an interesting, sturdy, hardy, PRICKERY plant. But there's so many different varieties.

I also remember, as a kid, drying these out and making little mice out of them - you tear off all but one of those surrounding spiney things, (tail) and put seed bead eyes and nose on the front. They're kinda cute.

Ah, I'm very well acquainted with this moody weed. Had to go out into the horse pasture and pull the suckers up under the pretense that we would get paid 10-cents per hour doing so. One hour of messing with these nasty things and I didn't even bother to collect the dime.

My neighbor had some in her yard and didn't know what they were. Her husband suggested she pull them up, I gave her tips on how not to get skewered and asked if he was going to pay her 10 cents per hour or per unearthed thistle.
